How Bathukamma is made

Women make small Bathukammas for the one whole week and they play and dance around them by singing Bathukamma folklore songs every evening. They then leave the Bathukamma in the nearby pond or any waterbody.  On the last day, men go and gather wildflowers like gunaka and tangedu in big bags. These flowers are arranged by the entire family.

These flowers are beautifully arranged layer by layer in a concentric form on a brass plate using different coloured flowers alternatively. Each day, the layer is increased, i.e. on the 1st day, 1 layer of flower arrangement is done and on the 2nd day, 2 layers, etc.  This Bathukamma is kept before the family goddess and prayers are offered for prosperity,

In the evening, the women dress up in their finest of sarees and jewellery and place the Bathukamma in a large place where everyone can play around. Other women from the neighbourhood gather around and start singing the Bathukamma folk songs by clapping hands and move around by going round and round the Bathukamma. This depicts the human ring of love and bonding between women.

Before night sets in, women carry the Bathukamma on their heads and go to a nearby waterbody as a group, singing melodious songs of Bathukamma in a chorus.  Bathukamma is then slowly immersed in the lake and women return with empty brass plate singing songs praising Bathukamma. This festival shows how humans are closely related to nature (water, earth and flowers).  Tangedu flower is also declared as Telangana state flower as it aids in cleaning the water in the water body.
